# Root Canal Treatment in Bali to Save Your Tooth

Last updated: 29 October 2026

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals the canals, and lets you keep your natural tooth. This page explains the signs that point to a root canal, the step-by-step process and number of visits, what treatment feels like with local anaesthetic, recovery, flying afterwards and why most back teeth need a crown to finish.

## What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, part of the dental field called endodontics, removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so you can keep it. Inside every tooth is the dental pulp (the nerve and blood vessels), which runs down through narrow channels in the roots called root canals.

When deep decay, a crack or an old injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes inflamed or infected. In the early stage you may feel sharp pain with hot or cold drinks. Once the damage can’t heal, called irreversible pulpitis, the pain often throbs, lingers and keeps you awake. If the pulp dies, infection can spread to the bone at the root tip and form an abscess.

A root canal clears out the infection, disinfects the canals and seals them so bacteria can’t get back in. The tooth stays in your mouth and keeps working like a normal tooth.

## Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

- Toothache that throbs, wakes you at night or lingers after hot or cold food
- Pain when biting or tapping on one tooth
- A swollen gum or a small pimple on the gum near the tooth
- A tooth that has darkened after an old knock
- Swelling in the face or jaw (see an

    emergency dentist

promptly, or a hospital if it’s spreading)

Some infected teeth cause no pain at all and only show up on an X-ray. That’s one reason the dentist may suggest a root canal even when a tooth feels fine.

## What Happens During Treatment

After numbing the tooth with local anaesthetic, the dentist places a rubber dam to keep the area clean and dry. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber.

The canals are then cleaned and shaped with fine flexible instruments, often rotary nickel-titanium (NiTi) files. An apex locator measures the length of each canal, and a disinfecting solution such as sodium hypochlorite is used to rinse them. Finally, the canals are filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material, and sealed.

> Give the clinic your departure date when you request an appointment. A tooth between visits is protected with a temporary filling, and the notes can go to your home dentist if you need to finish treatment there.

## How Many Visits, and What About the Crown?

| Stage | Typical visits | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Diagnosis and start | 1 | Often combined with the first treatment visit |
| Cleaning and sealing | 1-2 | Infected teeth may need medicine placed between visits |
| Core build-up | Often same visit as sealing | Rebuilds the inside of the tooth |
| Crown (most back teeth) | 2, several days apart | A post and core may be needed if little tooth is left |

## Recovery and Aftercare

Expect the tooth to feel tender for a few days. Avoid chewing hard food on it until the final filling or

crown

is in place, as a root-treated tooth is more likely to crack. Keep the temporary filling clean and contact the clinic if it falls out, or if pain or swelling gets worse rather than better.

Common reasons

## When Might You Need Root Canal Treatment?

### Toothache that throbs or lingers

Pain that lasts long after a cold drink, or wakes you at night, often means irreversible pulpitis. The nerve can't heal on its own.

### A pimple on the gum near a tooth

This is often a drainage point for an abscess at the root tip. It may not hurt much, but the infection is still active.

### A darkened tooth after an old knock

A tooth that turns grey after trauma may have a dead nerve. A root canal can stop infection and the tooth can then be whitened or crowned.

### A deep crack or very deep filling

When decay or a fracture reaches the pulp, a root canal may be the only way to keep the tooth.

Step by step

## How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?

What usually happens from your request to the end of treatment. The dentist will explain anything specific to your case.

1. 01

    ### Step 1: Diagnosis

Cold and tapping tests plus a periapical radiograph show whether the pulp is inflamed or infected and whether the tooth can be saved.

2. 02

    ### Step 2: Numbing and isolation

Local anaesthetic numbs the area. A rubber dam (a thin sheet around the tooth) keeps it clean and dry and stops liquids reaching your throat.

3. 03

    ### Step 3: Cleaning the canals

The infected pulp is removed. The canals are measured with an apex locator, shaped with fine files and rinsed with sodium hypochlorite to disinfect them.

4. 04

    ### Step 4: Sealing

The cleaned canals are filled with gutta-percha and sealer. If more visits are needed, medicine is placed inside and the tooth is temporarily sealed.

5. 05

    ### Step 5: Restoring the tooth

A core build-up and, for most back teeth, a crown protect the tooth from cracking. This can be done in Bali or by your home dentist.

Cost

## How Much Does Root Canal Treatment Cost in Bali?

Prices aren't published yet. The cost of root canal treatment depends on the factors below, and you'll receive an itemised quote before any treatment begins.

Ask for a written, itemised quote in IDR before treatment starts, and keep the final invoice and treatment notes if you plan to claim on insurance.

No prices are published until the clinic confirms them. Ask for a quote that includes the final filling or crown.

| What affects the price | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Front or back tooth | Front teeth usually have one canal; molars can have three or four, which takes longer to clean and seal. |
| Number of visits | Some root canals are finished in one visit; infected or complex teeth may need two or three. |
| Re-treatment | Treating a tooth that already had a root canal is usually more complex than a first treatment. |
| Final restoration | A core build-up and crown are often needed afterwards and are usually priced separately. |
| X-rays | Several periapical X-rays are taken during treatment to check the length and seal of each canal. |

Questions

## Root Canal Treatment FAQs

### Does a root canal hurt?

Root canal treatment is done under local anaesthetic, so it usually feels similar to having a filling. It relieves the pain of an infected tooth, and mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.

### How many visits does a root canal take?

Many root canals take one or two visits, and some complex or badly infected teeth need three. Front teeth with one canal are often quicker than molars. If you're visiting Bali, tell the clinic your travel dates so the visits can be planned, and ask whether a temporary seal will hold until you get home.

### How many days do I need in Bali for a root canal and crown?

Allow for one to three root canal visits, then a crown, which usually takes two visits several days apart. In total that can mean one to two weeks depending on the tooth and the lab. If you don't have that long, the root canal can be finished in Bali and the crown fitted by your home dentist.

### Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Most back teeth (molars and premolars) need a crown after a root canal because the tooth becomes more brittle and can crack when chewing. Front teeth often only need a filling. Your dentist will explain which applies to your tooth.

### Can I fly after a root canal?

After most routine treatment, including fillings and root canals, flying the next day is usually fine. If you're between visits with a temporary filling, ask the dentist whether it's sealed well enough for your flight.

### What does recovery feel like?

The tooth may feel tender to bite on for a few days as the surrounding tissue settles. Over-the-counter pain relief usually helps. Severe pain, swelling or a temporary filling falling out are reasons to contact the clinic.

### Is it better to pull the tooth instead?

Keeping your natural tooth is usually better for chewing and for the bone around it. An extraction is quicker and cheaper at first, but the gap often needs a bridge or other replacement later. If a tooth can't be saved, extraction is the right option, and the dentist will explain why.

### What is root canal re-treatment?

Sometimes a tooth that had a root canal years ago gets infected again, perhaps because a canal was missed or the seal leaked. Re-treatment removes the old filling material, cleans the canals again and re-seals them. It's more complex than a first treatment and takes longer.

### Will I need antibiotics?

Usually not. Cleaning out the infection is what fixes the problem. Antibiotics are only needed if the infection is spreading, for example with facial swelling or fever.
