What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lighten the natural colour of your teeth. The gel releases oxygen that breaks down the stain molecules inside the enamel and the layer beneath, so the whole tooth looks brighter, not just the surface.
There are two main methods. In-chair whitening uses a stronger hydrogen peroxide gel applied by the dental team, with your gums protected, in one longer appointment. Take-home whitening uses a milder carbamide peroxide gel worn in custom whitening trays for a set time each day over one to two weeks. The methods offered by the clinic will be confirmed before you book.
Because a dentist checks your teeth first, protects your gums and controls the gel strength, professional whitening is more predictable and gentler on your mouth than unsupervised kits.
Who Is Whitening For?
- People with yellowing from age, coffee, tea or smoking
- Anyone wanting a brighter smile before a wedding, event or photos, a common request from visitors staying in Seminyak and Legian
- Patients planning cosmetic bonding or crowns (whitening comes first)
Whitening may not be suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have untreated decay or gum disease, or for very sensitive teeth. The dentist will check before treatment.
Understanding Stains
| Stain type | Example causes | How well whitening works |
|---|---|---|
| Extrinsic (surface) | Coffee, tea, red wine, smoking | Very well, after a clean |
| Age-related yellowing | Thinner enamel, darker inner tooth | Usually well |
| Intrinsic (inside the tooth) | Some medicines, trauma, fluorosis | Less predictable; other options may help |
| Single dark tooth | Dead nerve after an old injury | Needs assessment; may need a root canal or crown |
Managing Sensitivity
Short-lived sensitivity is the most common side effect. To keep it manageable:
- Use a sensitivity toothpaste for a week or two before and after whitening
- Ask about fluoride varnish or a desensitising gel after the session
- With take-home trays, skip a day if your teeth feel sore
- Avoid very cold drinks for the first 24-48 hours
The 48-hour rule
For two days after whitening, your teeth pick up stains more easily. Go easy on coffee, tea, red wine, soy sauce and dark sambal, and skip smoking.
Keeping Your Results
Brush twice daily, rinse with water after coloured drinks and keep up regular cleans. Many people top up their shade every so often with take-home gel. If you notice one tooth darkening on its own, have it checked, as it can be a sign of a problem with the nerve.
